A Senate inquiry has recommended the closure of all 24 coal-fired power stations in Australia over the next 10 years and the creation of a comprehensive energy transition plan to help with the ordered closure of the plants.
The report, which was tabled in the Senate on November 28, made four recommendations:
- that the federal government adopts an energy transition plan and reforms the National Electricity Market rules;
- that it develops a mechanism for the orderly retirement of coal-fired power stations;
- that it puts in place pollution-reduction objectives in line with the country's obligations under the Paris Agreement;
- that it creates an energy transition authority to plan the sector's transition to renewable power generation.
