Residents are continuing to resist the Inner West Council pro-developer “Fairer Futures” housing plan.

The Inner West Council narrowly passed the plan in a heated extra-ordinary Council meeting on September 30.

Their "Fairer Futures" Plan aims to add more than 44,000 dwellings to suburbs in Sydney’s Inner West and will need to demolish streets in Marrickville, Leichhardt, Petersham, Ashfield and Dulwich Hill and build massive private apartment blocks in their stead.

The current plan has only 2% (going up to 3%) affordable housing which is anything but affordable at rents of 80% of market rent.

The ALP councillors were the only councillors to pass the plan, saying the massive expensive apartment-build plan would assuage the housing crisis and reduce rents.

Because this is a private build “Fairer Futures” will not reduce homelessness rates or rents.

Only developers and property investors will benefit from this plan. It won't assist workers, single mums, families or people with disabilities.

The plan will have a very significant impact on the natural environment and liveability of Marrickville, Ashfield, Dulwich Hill, Petersham and Leichhardt.

The demolitions are not far off.

The Council is in the process of approving the demolition of 17 low-rent units at 50-52 Warren Road Marrickville for the development of a 9-storey block with only 8 of the new apartments to be “affordable” at 80% of market rent for the first 15 years.

Evictions could happen soon. Tenants were “told” via a QR code on their front doors. This is another example of the deplorable “consultation” undertaken by Council to residents.

Residents and the community are organising against this voracious developer swindle.

Organising to build homes for people, not profit. For community, not corporations.

Join the Better Future Coalition (BFC) and Action for Public Housing to protest this abominable corporate takeover of the Inner West. The BFC is a grassroots initiative of concerned community members from Marrickville, Petersham, Leichhardt, Dulwich Hill, Balmain, Ashfield and Lilyfield.
