This play begins with the sound of choppers, dim lighting and a lone soldier captured by the confusion, hypocrisy and tragedy of the Vietnam War. The production is a rendition of the original 1967 version of On Stage Vietnam, which made its protest through music, parody and strong anti-war themes.
Rose Stone, one of the original cast members, explained, "The original performance tried to demystify the so-called domino effect for what it was. The performance was stopped after Harold Holt's disappearance because of its supposed defamatory reference to the then prime minister." This New Theatre production is free to have the character perform the "Australian Crawl" while talking.
The original production used the songs and music of the day, and spoke to an audience that was living with the Vietnam War. The director of the current production, realising that many in the audience would not know the history of that war, uses dance and drama to tell the story and evoke the mood of the time.
The first act sets the scene in Vietnam, examining the role of the French and United States governments. The second act is more about Australia's involvement and reactions to the Vietnam War.
The play is a dynamic combination of song, dance and drama, choreographed by Josie Palermo. The enthusiastic cast give energetic and professional performances. Together, the songs and parody are an effective call for people to get involved. On Stage Vietnam still holds a message relevant to us all.
