Indigenous man, Robert Barnes, has been held in solitary confinement for over 700 days. The General Manager of Yatala has banned cultural support services from visiting prisoners in G-division (solitary confinement). This is a breach of the human rights treaties, legal requirements, and the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
We call for:
- The General Manager to be stood down immediately whilst an investigation is undertaken in response to recent allegations of human rights breaches, cultural ignorance and abuse of power.
- A review undertaken on the decision by the General Manager to ban Aboriginal Liaison officers from entering G-division to provide support to indigenous prisoners.
- Reinstating Aboriginal Liaison access to G-division.
- All prison staff must undertake training with respect to requirements to benefits of cultural support to Indigenous prisoners.
- Correctional services must review the current rules preventing prisoners in Yatala from receiving educational textbooks for personal possessions.
