More than 150,000 Quebecois post-secondary students are on strike, in a serious attempt to defeat a CN$103 million cut to the student bursary program. The strike began seven weeks ago when 30,000 students attended a walkout, and has grown steadily in both numbers and support. Three separate polls have now shown that more than two-thirds of Quebecois support the student's actions. The bursary money, cut last year, is relied on by poor students to study. The strike threatens to cause a general crisis for the province's government, which is trying to push through unpopular cuts to the public sector and privatisations.
