Show your support for the 14 Climate Defenders
Three Years Jail for three minutes protest?
This is what might happen when this group of 14 Climate Defenders face court on 23rd October.
These 14 people are the first Queenslanders in 30 years to be charged with the archaic criminal offence of "Disturbing the Legislature". It carries a potential jail sentence of 3 years.
In November last year, driven by sheer frustration, fear and desperation, they all stood up in the Qld Parliament during Question Time, and loudly demanded that the government must stop new coal and gas expansion.
Contrary to what The Speaker claimed at the time, this was not "a protest that attempted to disrupt our primary democratic institution.鈥 He entirely ignored the point: it was a desperate attempt to get the attention of a government that is hell-bent on the expansion of the fossil fuels which are destroying our life-support systems.
You are invited to come and stand alongside the Parliament 14 when they face court on Monday 23rd October for three minutes of waving banners and chanting "Stop gas, stop coal."
Demonstrate our support for these courageous people and send a strong message to the government and the media that there is strong support for free-speech and the right to protest 鈥 and that the community will no longer accept the approval of new coal and gas projects.
Let's prove again that we are all in this, whatever it takes, and for however long it takes.
Put the date in your diary now.
We want the Premier and all of the elected MPs to know that we, the public, are deeply concerned, and appalled by the Qld government's continuation to approve new coal and gas mines, and the draconian overreach targeting climate protesters.
WE WILL NOT GO AWAY UNTIL IT STOPS.
