DBH campaigner Petrina Harley will receive the verdict from her landmark trial last month, where she invoked the climate emergency defence against charges arising from her brave activism. In 2024, Petrina courageously took part in a DBH action that blocked the one road in and out of Woodside’s Burrup Hub in WA’s northwest. She was subsequently charged by with traffic offences and pleaded not guilty using the emergency defence, arguing that her ‘unlawful’ conduct was a proportionate response to a legitimate emergency. In this case, the emergency is clear. The climate crisis is here, and Woodside's Burrup Hub – the biggest fossil fuel project in the southern hemisphere – is categorically contributing to climate-related deaths, with no end in sight.
