The walls of the National Gallery of Victoria ran red on October 14 as activist group the Artists鈥 Committee, an informal association of artists and arts workers opposed to the detention of asylum seekers, continued its project to pressure the National Gallery of Victoria to immediately end its contract with Wilson Security.
Wilson Security provides security services to both the gallery and Australia鈥檚 offshore detention facilities on Manus Island and Nauru and is known to have committed human rights abuses against asylum seekers and refugees.
Refugee Art Project is a not-for-profit community art organisation that holds art workshops for asylum seekers and refugees 鈥 both within the Villawood detention centre and in its studio in north Parramatta.聽Eila Vinwynn spoke to Safdar Ahmed, who founded the group about its work and aims.

A documentary that premiered on Netflix on May 19 explores the life of a Brazilian transgender cartoonist who says she wants to break taboos surrounding her gender identity.
Ms Saffaa is a聽Saudi聽artist currently studying in Australia. As part of her practice, she creates murals championing the freedom of women in聽Saudi聽Arabia 鈥 in particular drawing attention to the prohibitive 鈥済uardian颅ship鈥 laws.
Under these laws, women must be accompanied by a male 鈥済uardian鈥 to do many every day activities 鈥 laws the Saudi regime slightly relaxed last month in a sign of pressure from campaigners.
Via Twitter, Saffaa鈥檚 work was taken up by a grassroots movement in聽Saudi聽Arabia and is now synonymous with the struggle to end these laws.
A Turkish court has handed down a two-year, nine-month and 22-day jail sentence to a Kurdish artist because of her painting of a Kurdish village being razed by Turkish security forces.
Zehra Dogan, an ethnic Kurd聽from Diyarbakir in south-eastern Turkey, was given the sentence by the Second High Criminal Court of Mardin province after having been arrested last July. In 1939, a young Australian woman grabbed the international headlines when she threw red paint onto the doorsteps of 10 Downing Street, whilst distributing leaflets hidden in copies of the Ladies Home Journal.
The action by Aileen Palmer was to protest the blood that then-British prime minister Neville Chamberlain had on his hands for selling out Spain and Czechoslovakia to European fascism.
The University of Sydney has acknowledged many times that students have the right to peacefully protest. For 65 days that is exactly what students and supporters of the university鈥檚 Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) did 鈥 until dawn on October 25 when 15 police and 20 guards forcibly ended their protest.
The students had been protesting since the university informed students and staff on June 21 of its plan to merge SCA with the University of NSW鈥檚 Art & Design Student Centre and the National Art School in Darlinghurst.
